About Goran

Goran Hamsic: War, Painting, Silence, and Other Stories

Traversing a vivid journey of artistry and resilience, Goran Hamsic, born in 1973 in the former Yugoslavia, embodies the essence of a multifaceted artist. Hailing from a lineage of esteemed artists, musicians, and painters, Goran's life has been steeped in creativity since his earliest days. Instruments, pencils, and paintbrushes were not mere tools but his childhood companions, foretelling his artistic path.

Education & Early Career: In the years 1985-1989, Goran embarked on his formal artistic journey, going to the Fine Arts Academy in Sarajevo, specializing in Graphic Design. This education laid the groundwork for his unique blend of traditional artistry and modern design principles. After relocating to Canada following the Yugoslavian war in 1995, Goran's experiences during the Bosnia war in Sarajevo from 1990 to 1995, particularly the harrowing memories of civilian tragedies, began to deeply influence his art. In 1998, seeking to broaden his horizons, he enrolled at the IAODT, diving into graphic design, multimedia, and technology.

Artistic Approach: Goran's paintings challenge and expand traditional perceptions, often blurring the lines between the living and the ethereal. His use of dark shades and striking reds, combined with the silent, melancholic forms of his human subjects, creates a poignant visual narrative. Eschewing traditional brushes for bespoke tools, Goran's technique ensures a deep infusion of paint into the canvas, achieving a harmonious and hauntingly beautiful blend. Over the years, his artistry has matured from a visceral rawness to a nuanced subtlety, reflecting his evolving perspective on life and art.

Professional Achievements & Collaborations: Goran's journey over the last 29 years, spanning Canada, Spain, and France, is marked by an impressive array of pro bono art projects, multimedia ventures, and exhibitions. A significant highlight of his career came in 2009 when he was invited by François-Xavier Souvay, the Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of LMPG, Inc. This invitation was to present his new collection, "Per artem lumen," a series that intricately explored the interplay of light and art. This opportunity not only broadened his horizons but also allowed him to showcase his profound versatility and creative vision on an international stage.

His collaborations, notably in the Province of Quebec, have been with a diverse range of artists and enterprises. A key milestone was the collaboration with Martin Bündock, Senior Consultant for Art Integration at Cirque du Soleil in 2000. This partnership resulted in the creation of 22 large artworks that garnered widespread acclaim and solidified Goran's reputation as an innovative and daring artist.

Digital Recognition & Awards: Goran's impact extends into the digital realm, evidenced by a series of awards that speak to his prowess and innovative approach. Highlights include the Plastic Pilot Award, Design Magazine Award, and the Adesa Design Award (2003 & 2004). These, along with other honors like the Canada online Graphics Award and the New Webpick Award, underscore his significant contributions to digital artistry. From 2000 to 2006, Goran's recognition in the online world of avant-garde creativity grew, further establishing his standing in the digital arts.

Present Endeavors & Future Plans: Now based in Montreal, Goran's art continues to garner global acclaim, with a significant presence in regions such as Quebec, China, Spain, the USA, France, and Germany. His works are treasured by renowned organizations like Cirque du Soleil & Lumenpulse, enhancing his visibility and acclaim. Beyond his artistic creations, Goran thrives as a Senior Visual Designer and Art Creative Director, forging meaningful collaborations with Canada's top artists and companies. He is also at the helm of an initiative supporting artists in overcoming challenges and bolstering their professional paths both locally and internationally.
